IMPACTING COMMUNITY

Kitchens for Change

The genesis of this organization began post-pandemic, as the already prevalent issue of food insecurity had been exacerbated even further. Many local communities within Turlock even struggled to find where their next meal would come from.

Elias Rabine, and his mother, Mohini Singh were seated around the kitchen island, discussing what could be done at a local level to help alleviate the issue. From this point, the organization grew.

We developed a foundation for the organization, finding Audrey Smallwood, who would become the vice president of the organization. Both Elias and Audrey gathered a base of high schoolers and peers to help within their high school to work on the projects.  Following this, we met and made partnerships with local restaurants such as Bistro 234 and First & Main, which would provide the students with a means to execute projects. The final piece came from other local businesses such as Winton Ireland Strom & Green, Chef Leroy Walker with Bistro 234, and Matt Swanson with Associated Feed. Businesses such as theirs provided Kitchens for Change with the initial resources to begin their work.

It was in this intersection that Kitchens for Change found its legs. We hosted multiple projects throughout the year, cooking and serving groups suffering from food insecurity throughout Turlock.

Yet the next big leap for us came when we transitioned from a highschool based club to a nonprofit organization. The enthusiasm and support for the organization put us on a track for expansion. With this move, we look to share the power of food with as many areas as possible.

With Kitchens for Change current governing board and excited volunteers, we hope to impact our community and surrounding communities in a positive way through our Mission, Vision, and Values.
